The Second Awakening: Beyond Understanding, Into Embodiment

For a little over the past decade, we have witnessed what we could call the first awakening.
During this time, millions of people began questioning all the different narratives they had inherited. Many of us began to ask critical questions about what society and culture had taught us that life was about. We sensed how shallow much of it was - the contemporary interpretation of the nature of existence.
And in great numbers we turned towards healing and spirituality, personal growth and self-realisation. Many of us learned about trauma and the nervous system, we did shadow work, manifestation practices, we began exploring the different paths of plant medicines, we felt our bodies and emotions though breathwork, we danced our way into momentary ecstasy and explored ways of communicating and being more authentic.
Never has there been a time with so many modalities offering us their way back to truth.
And many of these approaches have been profoundly beautiful and deeply important. And there's nothing inherently wrong with any of them. They have opened hearts, expanded awareness and in many ways, prepared us for what is now unfolding.
Because over the last couple of years, something has begun to shift.
More and more people are sensing that what once felt true and alive and exciting, simply no longer reaches them as deeply. There's a growing resistance towards the very modalities and practices that once seemed to transform our lives.
Many feel a deep exhaustion they cannot quite explain, and we see many facilitators that are finding it harder to fill their spaces.
Friends and folks in our community tell us they're "so done with all the spiritual nonsense". Some go back to old vices of drinking and smoking because "life's too short for this". And our spiritual idols come tumbling down from their pedestals, again and again.
So what's going on?
So many people have done "The Work". The therapy. The somatic practices. The meditation. The Breathwork and the plant ceremonies.
They've felt their grief and anger through all the different modalities, but they still struggle when tension arises in their everyday life, at work, or in their relationship(s).
Despite having spent years on "the healing journey" they're still finding themselves in the same patterns, the same reactions - falling into the same cycles and loops in certain areas of their lives.
They're still attracting the same kind of partner. Still collapsing when life becomes hard.
Still people-pleasing to the point of exhaustion. Still struggling to speak their actual truth.
Still subtly trying to prove their worth.
And so of course there's a lot of exhaustion.
Maybe you can also recognise some of this? You have been on your "healing journey" for years and you now have much greater awareness around your own wounds, your shadows, your light and being. You have developed a great mental understanding.
But maybe you still have a sense of disconnection? A sense of separation. A feeling of being slightly removed from Life, caught in the constant movement of “doing”, in the pursuit to get somewhere, to reach a place where Life will finally be more easy and more rewarding.
Maybe you've even become addicted to the spiritual spaces, always searching for that place through the next ceremony, the next medicine, the next peak experience.
This is what we see at least - how so many people on the spiritual, self-development path are still living in separation from Life itself.
And we believe this is because humanity is now arriving at the beginning of a second awakening.
Awareness is no longer enough
While the first awakening helped many of us become aware of our deep conditioning, what is needed now, is that we actually awaken from it.
And there's a big difference there.
One of the greatest blind spots we have encountered - both in ourselves and in the hundreds of people we have worked with - is that the conditioned mind can become extraordinarily sophisticated. And it can begin to sound quite "spiritual".
The conditioned mind can understand itself. It can explain itself. And it can build an incredibly beautiful spiritual identity, and learn to speak eloquently about surrender and trauma and embodiment and presence.
And yet, it can still be the one running the entire "healing journey", the one running our entire life.
This was certainly true for us.
For years we genuinely believed we were becoming more free and that we were moving towards our actual Truth. And in many ways we were. But underneath much of our growth and evolution something really fundamental remained completely untouched.
Our conditioned identity had not disappeared, it had simply become more refined, more conscious and more "spiritual." The mind - through all "The Work" - had learned the language of awakening without actually surrendering its position at the center of it all.
That realization was one of the most humbling moments of our lives.
The loop so many people feel
This is why we see so many sincere, intelligent and devoted people feeling really stuck in these times.
So many know their patterns deeply. They understand their nervous system. They can explain exactly why they react the way they do.
And yet they continue creating the same relationships, the same adaptations, the same exhaustion and the same internal struggles.
Almost despite the fact that they have "done so much work" on themselves.
But here's the thing: Understanding alone does not dissolve our deep conditioning. The conditioned mind can analyse itself endlessly without ever allowing its own architecture to collapse.
And so it keeps us on the "healing journey." It keeps us seeking for the next thing. It keeps us believing that one more workshop, one more ceremony, one more medicine, one more breakthrough or one more insight will finally bring us home.
But that home never arrives, because we're trying to move beyond conditioning from within conditioning itself. And that's simply not possible.
The second awakening is a crossing
What is asked of us now feels very different. Because the second awakening is not primarily about expanding awareness. We've already done that. And through it, we believe we've now seen the limitations of where our minds can take us.
The second awakening is about surrender.
And you've heard that word a million times before, and your mind probably has an idea about what that means. And maybe your body has too. We cannot honestly say anything about where you are in your embodiment. All we can do is share with you, what we've seen a lot these past years, and that's a "surrender" that is not embodied.
Instead we see this, the type of "surrender" that says:
I'll go to Breathwork and feel my anger so that I can alchemise it and learn to set better boundaries.
I'll surrender to the wisdom of the plants so that I can get rid of my anxiety and find my true purpose.
I'll surrender to a meditation practice so that I can change my present state and find a more lasting sense of peace.
I'll become spiritual so I can predict and control my future towards a "better outcome".
Even if it's completely unconscious, so many of us meet our emotions with an agenda.
And this view usually triggers some people, so we invite you to inquire into this with a humble curiosity: Is there a part of you that is pursuing the spiritual path in order to change your present state, to find more peace, to experience less of unwanted emotions, to have more abundance, to find success in life, etc?
We believe that's the case for all of us.
And when we're doing so, we're actually rejecting Life where it is, and we're rejecting all the deep intelligence that exists in the truth of the now moment. And we're rejecting Nature itself, when a part of us believes that we can outsmart her.
And then your conditioned identity hasn't lost its position as the one directing your life. It's still the protection mechanisms of the Ego that are trying to stay "in control". You're still trying to manage, and predict and control your life with your mind. Even though your spiritual language and practices tells a different surface level story.
And it will continue to do so, until we stop trying to organise life through our own conditioned will and instead become available to the intelligence of Creation that is always moving through us.
This is why we often call it The Crossing. The second awakening is something we must cross into.
A crossing is different from another spiritual insight. When you cross into something, or into somewhere, you always leave something behind. And a crossing changes the one who crosses, and you do not return in the same way.
Why we created The Path of Re:Union
About two years ago, our own path changed dramatically.
Many of the modalities we had previously offered, some for 10+ years (Breathwork, plant medicine, sound healing, Circling among others) no longer felt aligned with where Life was inviting us. At least not in the form they were offered. And especially not with the subtle agenda of "fixing" that we discovered was at the foundation of them all. How many of them actually supported people in "dealing" with what Life was bringing them, instead of welcoming it all as offerings from a deeper intelligence.
In short, they simply no longer addressed what we increasingly recognised as the deeper invitation from Life. And we had to begin to explore where we were actually moving from, when facilitating or even participating in the realms of the spiritual path.
And so we paused. And we questioned almost everything we thought we knew.
We found mentors capable of reflecting our conditioning in ways we had never experienced before. Which was quite confronting and deeply humbling.
And it changed the direction of our lives. And out of that process, Re:Union was born, as a living container that supports the gradual dismantling of conditioning and the return to a life that is no longer organised by the conditioned mind, but by that deeper intelligence that's already present within us.
A different kind of embodiment
Today the word embodiment is everywhere.
But as we have explored, we have found that what many people call embodiment is often still being carefully managed by the conditioned mind.
The body is allowed to feel - but only within the limits the mind finds acceptable. And only if we know that it will lead to something "better". To peace, to health, to setting better boundaries, to abundance and so on. There's always a hidden agenda behind it.
But the second awakening invites something much deeper. It is a return to the intelligence of Life itself.
A reconciliation between mind and body. Between the masculine and the feminine. Between our personal will and the will of Creation.
And it is not about becoming more spiritual, if anything, it is about becoming more fully human.
If you recognise yourself…
If you find yourself exhausted by endless healing…
If you feel resistance towards spiritual spaces that once inspired you…
If you understand yourself deeply but still cannot seem let your own Truth move you..
If you sense that Life is asking something entirely different of you…
Then perhaps you are also standing at this crossing.
Where you feel that awareness is no longer enough, and you're ready to allow Life itself to become the teacher.
This is what The Path of Re:Union exists to support.
